Castelrotto and surrounding area

The picturesque village of Castelrotto and its historic center is one of the most attractive and most visited tourist spots of the region. Regardless the season, the local community of the Sciliar area is comprised of happy, positive people. We are quick to laugh, and appreciate the natural beauty of our surroundings. We continue to live by and cultivate the traditions of our past. Our guests find relaxation and recuperation in Castelrotto, but the village also offers a lot of interesting opportunities for different sportive activities for people of any age. A shopping trip to the center of Castelrotto allows for everyone to find the appropriate gift or souvenir. Locals are especially proud of the village church steeple, at 88 meters its spire is one of the tallest in the region. You will have the opportunity to join one of the weekly-held visits of the tower. The most famous locals of Castelrotto are the “Kastelruther Spatzen” who attract thousands of fans to our village and community. Immerse yourself in Castelrotto, which is also home to the world-champion skiers Denise Karbon and Peter Fill.

The sunny plateau of the Sciliar is surrounded by high mountain peaks, deep forests, beautiful valleys, and wide fields and postures. The variety of this area of scenic beauty, art, tradition and character of its inhabitants make this part of South Tyrol especially attractive.

The area surrounding the Sciliar dates back more than 2,000 years of historical history. The traces of prehistoric settlements, rampart- constructions, leftovers of a roman castle’s, ruins of medieval times, and residencies from the 17th and 18th century are still visible. The next village of the community of Castelrotto, Siusi allo Sciliar, became especially famous as summer-residence in the beginning of the 20th century. The new modern way of life is established side on side to traditional ways- mores that still today characterize the South Tyrolean culture. The gondola that takes people up to the Alpe di Siusi and to the center of the natural park of the Sciliar is located in Siusi. Another attraction of Siusi is the “Ruin Hauenstein”, the medieval residence of the minnesinger Oswald von Wolkenstein. To honor him, each year the “Oswald von Wolkenstein-Ritt” takes place.

Fiè allo Sciliar, which is the health resort of the natural park, is especially known for its culture and gastronomy. The major attraction of Fiè is the Castle “Proesels”, which was built around 1,200 by the Lords of Fiè and constitutes the cultural center of the high plateau (i.e., the Sciliar area) today.
