The Alpe di Siusi

The Alpe di Siusi

The Alpe di Siusi is the largest alpine meadow of Europe. It is surrounded by breathtaking scenery. In 1974, the first natural park of South Tyrol was created here. With an area equivalent to about 8,000 soccer fields, 365 sheds, pastures, huts, lodges and countless hiking- and climbing paths, and mountain bike trails, the Alpe di Siusi is well-known for its vastness and natural beauty, an ideal locale for recuperation in the heart of South Tyrol. Like a huge open-air arena, the Alpe di Siusi is located in between the giants of the Dolomites, the Sasso Lungo-and Sasso Piatto, and the Sciliar, between 1,800 and 2,300 meters of height.

The Alpe di Siusi

The Sciliar is the symbol of South Tyrol: it is over 2,500 meters high and because of its distinctive shape it can be appreciated from any line of sight. At the summit of the Sciliar is the Sciliar Lodge which is accessible via a variety of hiking paths or climbing routes. South Tyrol’s first natural park was created from the area surrounding the Sciliar to preserve the unique ecosystem around the Sciliar for succeeding generations.

The Alpe di Siusi Natural Park is characterized by coniferous and mixed forests and by a diverse fauna. The Alpe di Siusi itself, on the other hand, is comparable to a rooftop terrace of the Sciliar area. From the gondola in Siusi, the Alm is easily accessible. Because of the closure of the road leading to the Alpe di Siusi, the vehicular traffic on the Alpe di Siusi is greatly reduced. The future goal is to create a completely car-free zone on the Alpe di Siusi. The beautiful and mysterious Catinaccio is directly linked to the Alpe di Siusi.

The Catinaccio in the Dolomites

The Catinaccio mountain is part of the Natural Park Sciliar-Catinaccio since 2003. The Catinaccio is located in the Valley of Tires with its villages of Tires and Nova Levante in the Val d’Ega to the west and the Fassa Valley to the east. The Catinaccio begins in the south and stretches from the Sciliar in the north until the Passo di Carezza. Its highest peak is the Catinaccio d’Antermoia, which is 3004 meters high and is accessible from a climbing path which begins at the Passo Principe-hut. One of two climbing paths leading to the Catinaccio d’Antermoia is the original one--the same one that the person took that climbed the mountain for the first time. This original climbing path made the Catinaccio d’Antermoia the most visited peak of the Catinaccio. Moreover, the Catinaccio d’ Antermoia has one of the most beautiful vistas of the Dolomites.

The Catinaccio in the Dolomites

However, the main crest of the Catinaccio is the Catinaccio-peak, which is 2,981 meters high and is located in the middle of the Catinaccio-group of peaks. Even though it is the second highest peak of the group, it is still the most famous of all the peaks. The access to the trail can be reached through the Santner-Pass-climbing path starting at the Koelner Hut. From the east, the ascent through the Vajolet-Valley is of comparable length.

The six Vajolet-Towers are a bizarre rock formation in the center of the Catinaccio-group. To the north, they are confined by the Passo Vajolet (2,459 meters) and to the south, by the Passo Laurino(2,627 meters).

The Sciliar is more than just a mountain in front of our house... it is a landmark of both South Tyrolean mythos and everyday life.

The Sciliar is the singular landmark of South Tyrol, its summit glows in the sunlight at more than 2,500 meters elevation. The history of the creation of the Dolomites comes to life here. The Sciliar is a fossilized coral reef. From Siusi and Castelrotto the Sciliar presents itself as the monumental double-peak (Santner peak and the Euringer peak) of the western Dolomites.

The Dolomites
On June 26th 2009 the Dolomites became a UNESCO World Natural Heritage. The world famous mountain climber Reinhold Messner commented:” There are many mountains on this earth, but the most beautiful are the Dolomites.”

The Dolomites are part of the eastern Alps and are characterized by their uniquely bright Dolomite stone. From a geographical perspective, the term Dolomites alludes to the border area of three Italian Provinces: South Tyrol, Trentino and Belluno.

The characteristic stone of the Dolomites is actually fossilized coral reef from the Triassic Era (about 250 million years ago). These reefs were created from organisms and sediments of the tropical sea Tethys.

The entire Alps were pushed up through the clash of the Adriatric and the Eurasian plates. This is also how the Dolomites were formed.

Interesting is the diverse specification of the rock formation. The Sciliar- and Sella-mountains are shaped like mensas, on which extended pastures like the Alpe di Siusi were created. In contrast, there are also more sheer mountains such as the Tre cime di lavaredo and the Catinaccio.
